God is real, but why so unpopular?

We're going to be looking this evening at the fact that God is real. And then the question, why is he so unpopular? Why are there so many people that do not believe in God? Myriads are indifferent about the existence of God. Others outright deny the existence of God, and still others affirm the existence of some kind of supreme being.

But does it really matter if there is a God or not? Does it have any effect on your life? And on my life? Is there a true God while others are false gods? Actually, it does matter immensely.

And it does matter specifically which God you believe in, which God you worship and serve. It will impact your life, your outlook, your values, and more importantly, where you will spend eternity. The existence of God is certainly not dependent on a majority opinion. In history, the majority has very frequently been dead wrong. But there is undeniable evidence that there is a true God.

There's convincing evidence. And for that we need to examine what the Bible says. And I present you with three undeniable truths. First of all, the Bible assumes the existence of God. The very first verse in the Bible does so.

It says, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. It does not argue the existence of God. It doesn't try to convince anyone of it. It just plainly assumes it. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

The second undeniable evidence is fulfilled, prophecy. God states emphatically that he is God, uniquely so, without rival. In Isaiah, chapter 46 and verse five, God says, to whom will you liken me and make me equal and compare me? That we may be like, is there anyone that you can compare me to?

Is anybody like me? And the answer is, of course, no. And then down in verse nine of Isaiah 46, remember the former things of old, for I am God. So in Genesis 1:1, there's the complete assumption that God exists, doesn't try to prove it. Here, God states emphatically that he is God.

For I am God and there is none else. There is no one else. I am God and there is none like me. And then in verse ten, declaring the end from the beginning, in other words, God issues the true statement and a challenge to any God doubters and God deniers in verse ten saying that he declares the end from the beginning, that is, and from ancient times, the things that are not yet done. In other words, God tells us of future things, hundreds and even thousands of years before they take place.

Individuals over the centuries have undertaken the task of proving that there is no God, or that the God of the Bible is not real, and they study laboriously to do so. And they try to prove that there is no God. They try to prove that Christ is not God. They try to prove that the resurrection of Christ never happened. And they spend endless hours studying that, only to be convinced by the evidence.

Specific and exact prophecies have been recorded by God in his word about many, many events. In addition, there are prophecies about the Lord Jesus Christ. There are prophecies about when he would be born, the exact time is stated in scripture, where he would be born, under what conditions, where he would live, what he would accomplish in his lifetime on earth, when even exactly he would die, and the events preceding his death. So how he would die, what would be done to him while hanging on the cross, what his responses would be while he hung on the cross, and then that he would raise himself after three days, and on and on and on. There are hundreds of prophecies.

And the intent here is not to go through the many hundreds of prophecies that have already been fulfilled, which actually many have undertaken the task of trying to prove the mathematical likelihood of their exact fulfillment as coincidence. And they have stated that it is absolutely, completely impossible. There is zero chance that all of these prophecies would be fulfilled exactly the way scripture described them hundreds and sometimes thousands of years before they happen. The intent here is only to state that fulfilled prophecy is undeniable evidence of the existence of an all knowing, all wise God. And so much more, of course, could be said in this context.

Thirdly, God has provided man with proof that he exists and that he created this universe. We have to go to Romans, chapter one and verses 19 and 20 to begin with. Where God records in his word because that which may be known or is known of God is manifest in them. So God states here that there is an evidence that God exists, and that evidence is inside of man. And then he says, for God has showed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world. So we have conscience and now we have creation. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen being understood by the things that are made, even as eternal power and godhead, so that they are without excuse. So this passage states that there are two powerful evidences that are given by God to every human being that has ever existed. Conscience, an inward awareness built into us of the existence of God and creation surrounding all of us that screams out loudly that God exists.

As quoted above whether we want to see it or not. Creation tells us of God's infinite power inherent in him to create this universe by speaking it into existence from absolutely nothing. All right, Hebrews chapter eleven and verse three, which makes clear the fact that when God created the heavens and the earth, he did not start with something that was already there and then shape it into existence, shape it into its current form. That's what we have to do when we manufacture something, when we develop a new product, when we build something, we start with something and then shape it into its purposed, useful existence.

God didn't start that way. The great miracle of creation is that God started with nothing and all he had to do was speak it into existence. He spoke the word and it was there. That's how awesome and how powerful and how real God is. Hebrews chapter eleven and verse three says through faith, and by the way, it requires an understanding and a belief in God, that he is real, that he's all powerful and that he's able to speak this whole universe into existence.

Faith is not a leap into the dark. Faith has a substance. Faith has a reality. Verse one of Hebrews chapter eleven says that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith is not a leap into the dark, hoping that something is real.

Faith, true faith, is always based on what God says, who God is, and what he reveals in his word, and what faith leads us to as we read and study the word of God, and as we respond positively to the evidences that God has given us of his existence, his eternal power, his infinite wisdom by faith. Verse three. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed, perfectly joined together, perfectly put together by the word of God, not by his hands, not by taking something that was already there. The worlds were put together, joined together perfectly by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made by things that can be seen or that appear or that are existent. And so it is that God has created this universe and he tells us of his infinite power inherent in him and how he created all of this.

In fact, one of the things that we read in the book of John in chapter one, it speaks about creation. It's interesting that actually God the father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit were involved, who together created as God one God manifest in three distinct persons. All three had part in the creation of this world, the creation of this universe, and in fact the creation of who you are as a human being. In John chapter one, the apostle John begins his gospel with. In the beginning.

In the beginning was the Word capital W, referring to a person, as we will see later in these verses. In the beginning was the Word. And the Word this person called the Word was with God. Not only was the Word in the beginning with God, it says, and the Word was God. So we know from this verse that the Word is God.

God is manifest in the the Lord Jesus Christ, who is called the Word. Verse two, the same was in the beginning with God. And then see what it says here about his role in creation. Remember, in Hebrews, chapter eleven, verse three. By faith we know, we believe that God created something out of nothing.

Those things which are seen were made by something that was not even existent before. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him referring to the Word. And without him was not anything made that was made. So there's an exclusivity here.

As you recall, God spoke this universe into existence. It was God the Son, who is the Word that powerfully, wisely shaped this world into existence by speaking it into existence. That's how powerful God is. And that's the evidence that all of us have, the evidence of creation, which screams out loudly of the existence of God, the wisdom of God, and the power of God. Reading on in John, chapter one, all things were made by him. Without him was not anything made that was made. And then in verse 14, in case there's any doubt or question, in verse 14, and the word was made flesh. So the Word which is referred to in the first couple of verses of the Gospel of John, this Word which created, this Word which brought things into existence, is the Lord Jesus Christ. Because the Word, it says here, was made flesh. He took on human form and dwelt among us.

So he came to earth. God the son took on human form to dwell among us as one of us, as 100% Man and 100% God, he dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory, the infinite wonder, all that is resident in God. We beheld that as we studied, as we beheld, as he lived among men on this earth. And we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the father, full of grace and truth. This is the one and only, the only begotten, the one and only unique son of the father, the only begotten of the father.

And that is the reality of who God is. And so we have all of this great evidence of the existence of God. And man tries to get rid of that evidence. Man doesn't believe it. Man rejects it, as we will see in the next session.

And man is in trouble because of that. And it's either you believe that there is a God or you believe there is no God. You have that choice. But the consequences of that choice are eternal. They impact not only your life, but it impacts your eternal destiny.

It's important that we believe not just in a God, but that we believe in the one true living God who's given to us indisputable evidence of his existence, the fact that he is, and that he's an all powerful, all wise, infinite God who takes nothing and brings it into existence, into this great universe. What's amazing to me is that scientists study everything about creation. They might study all subjects on science. Medical doctors study the human body and the intricacies of the human body and the greatness of what we're capable of doing. Thought process that we have a mind with which we can think, that we have emotions with which we can feel, that we have a will whereby we can make decisions, and that we can not create, but form and shape and make all these amazing things on this world from things that God created.

And man is faced with all of this evidence and still rejects the existence of the true and living God. How amazing is that? It doesn't take faith to reject the existence of God. It takes the opposite of faith. It's rejecting what God has given to us as evidences.

It takes a willful rejection of what God has given to us. And that spells trouble for human beings who reject the existence of God. It's interesting, God does not impose himself on us. He exposes us to evidence.

He exposes us to his word, he exposes us to his truth. And we have the choice of whether to accept what God says in his word and the evidences that he has given to us, or we have the choice of rejecting those things. However, we do not have a choice as to the consequences of the choices that we make in life. So you and I are faced with these realities, simple, basic realities that are evident in our creation and in our hearts that there is a God. But something happened, something took place that caused man to reject all of this and to say, I don't want to hear about it, I don't want to know anything about it.

And it's to the demise of human beings.

And so there you have the evidences that God has given conscience and creation, and how God says in his word it came into existence. There's no other way to explain the existence of this universe. Man tries to explain it in some other way, but there's not a right way of explaining it other than the word of God, which tells us very exactly and very specifically how God brought it into existence. The power of his word. Just think of it.

God speaking something into existence. Just speaking it. As we read in the book of Genesis, constantly, regularly, it says about what he created. It says. And God said.

God said that there would be light. And there was light. God said, let the moon and the stars and the sun appear. And the sun and the moon and the stars appeared. God said, let there be daylight.

And there was daylight. God made all of this, and he said it was good. And then he made man. He created man. He took man and formed us into who we as humans are.

God said, let there be waters under the heavens. So God spoke it into existence. The key word here is God said. God said, let there be light. God said, let there be a firmament in the heavens.

God said that. So that's how God brought it into existence.
